Fashion Terms:
Fashion
     Fashion is the most general term and applies to any way of dressing and behaving that is favored at any one time or place.
 
Style
     Style is the person’s own choice in clothes, accessories, and others. Style is not totally dependent on clothing; it can be related to anything that makes the person look stylish. In another view, style is the extension of fashion which does not change like fashion.

Line and collection
     A fashion collection is a seasonal production of styles while a line is more or less the products of a business unit of a fashion brand. Each line can have several collections in a year, but a brand can also release a collection featuring outfits from multiple lines (business units).
  
Mannequin
     A mannequin (also called a dummy, lay figure, or dress form) is a doll, often articulated, used by artists, tailors, dressmakers, window dressers and others, especially to display or fit clothing and show off different fabrics and textiles.
 
Dress form
     Dress forms are used by fashion institutions, sampling department in a garment factory, in boutique houses, and by haute couture designers. It looks like a simple tool. But dress forms are responsible for the fit of the garment that you are wearing.
     In this article, we will discuss different types of dress forms and going to know about what a dress form is along with its importance.
      A dress form Is a three-dimensional model of a torso or an entire body, moulded to take the shape of the human body. It comes in different sizes which often differ according to manufacturers. It is mostly used for fitting clothing that is being designed or sewed. These are available for male, female and kids dress forms.
 
Fashion show
       A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase their upcoming line of clothing and/ or accessories during a fashion week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the spring/summer and fall/winter seasons. This is where designers seek to promote their new fashions.
 
High Fashion
      High fashion, also known as Haute Couture, which means high sewing or high dress making, refers to the creation of exclusive and custom-made
garments that have a unique fashion design. Its construction only involves handmade processes from the beginning until the end.
 
Haute Couture
     Haute Couture is a much-misused phrase that actually has very specific rules for qualification. Translated literally, couture is French for dressmaking, while haute means high. These are garments created as one off pieces for a specific client.
 
Couture and Couturier
      Couture is found in (and can be used as a shortening of) the term haute couture, which refers to the world of high fashion and custom-made garments.
A person who designs, makes, and sells fashion clothes for women is known as Couturier.
 
Knock-off
     An unlicensed copy of something, especially fashion clothing, intended to be sold at a lower price than the original.
 
Avant-garde
      The advance group in any field, esp. in the visual, literary, or musical arts, whose works are characterized chiefly by unorthodox and experimental methods.
 
Pre–a–porter
Ready to wear clothes

Role/qualities of a Fashion Designer
· Overseeing the research and development of new styles for an organization
· Managing the design process from conception through to final styling
· Conducting market research to identify new trends, fabrics and seek design inspiration
· Study fashion trends and anticipate designs that will appeal to consumers.
· Decide on a theme for a collection.
· Use computer-aided design(CAD) programs to create designs.
· Visit manufacturers or tradeshows to get samples of fabric.
· Select fabrics, embellishments, colors, or a style for each garment or accessory.
· Good communication, presentation and negotiation skills. Creative and artistic skills. Flexibility to adapt designs to suit clients’ needs. Good organization and planning skills.

Fashion Stylist
      A Fashion stylist, also Wardrobe stylist, is a consultant who selects the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures.
 
Fashion Journalist
     Fashion journalism is a component of fashion media, with a focus on writing and photojournalism. Fashion journalists write about fashion events, trends and have to cultivate and maintain a relationship with stylists and designers.
 
Fashion Merchandiser
      Fashion merchandisers work with designers to ensure that designs will be affordable and desired by the target market. Fashion merchandising involves apparel, accessories, beauty, and house wares. The end goal of fashion merchandising in any of these departments is to earn a profit.
  
Fashion Director
     A creative director is a person who makes high-level creative decisions and, with those decisions, oversees the creation of creative assets such as advertisements, products, events, or logos.
